The Student Associate Scheme

1. WHAT IS THE STUDENT ASSOCIATE SCHEME?

The Student Associate Scheme is a three year programme run by the TTA aiming to give students in higher education the opportunity to find out what it is like to be a teacher whilst still studying for their degree. The scheme is open to those students registered on relevant HND, foundation degree, undergraduate degree and postgraduate degree programmes, subject to certain conditions.

Students experience 10 or more days of school-centred training on the scheme and the training shows students what it is like to be a teacher and guides them in working with pupils. For more information from the TTA click here.

2. WHO CAN APPLY FOR THE SCHEME?
You must be registered, full or part-time, on a programme leading to a BA/BSc, post-graduate award, HND or foundation degree ( HND and foundation students may only join if there is a clear route by which they could progress to ITT).
You must not have Qualified Teacher Status or be following a programme leading to QTS and your participation must be additional to any provision currently available as part of your programme of study. You must not be funded from any other source.

To do level 2, you must have subject knowledge relevant to the National Curriculum and have achieved, or have the potential to achieve, grade C in GCSE English and Maths.

3. WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE STUDENT ASSOCIATE SCHEME?

For level one, there will be 3 ½ days of training followed by 10 days in school which will include an introduction to the National Curriculum, diversity in school, teachers learning and planning and school policies and facilities.
Level 2 is 15 days and allows those who wish to progress past level 1 to do so. There is a bursary paid of £ 40 per day for each day they spend in school and schools receive funding for supporting the students.
