Can I train on the GTP if I have qualified as a teacher overseas?

The GTP is not intended for those who have trained to be a teacher abroad. However, the 2Schools Consortium can support overseas trained teachers in achieving Qualified Teacher Status by offering:

  • guidance on collating evidence
  • advice on meeting the QTS standards
  • additional training (if required)
  • final assessment for QTS and where applicable QTS with exemption from NQT

Although the cost of the final assessment is met by the TDA, the teacher or school is charged for any training, meetings or preliminary visits(s).

Applications can be submitted at any time, with support and final assessments arranged to suit applicants.

You may apply for a place on our OTT programme if you:

  • have been teaching in the UK less than 4 years
  • are employed as a teacher on teachers’ pay and conditions, not as an HLTA, LSA or instructor
  • can provide original qualification certificates, or copies signed by your head teacher.
  • have GCSE, or equivalent in: English Language, Mathematics and Science (biology, physics or chemistry or a combined science)
  • have a degree - equivalent to a UK Bachelor’s Degree
  • have a recognised Teaching Qualification enabling you to teach primary age children.
  • are able to communicate clearly in spoken and written Standard English

If your qualifications are not equivalent, we can arrange equivalence tests for you.

OTTs must demonstrate that they can manage whole classes, have experience of teaching across two consecutive key stages and that they have sound knowledge of the National Curriculum.

If you meet the above and have at least 2 years classroom teaching experience, you can apply for QTS and NQT assessment.

Teachers from the European Community (EC) are likely to be recognised as qualified to teach in England. If you are qualified in an EC country you should contact the General Teaching Council on 08700010308 or www.gtce.org.uk. If your qualification is not recognise you may be eligible for the Graduate Teacher Programme.
